MARTINGALE DOG COLLARS
Martingale collars are generally used for dogs that pull heavily on the leash or for breeds that have narrow heads and can pull backwards out of a standard collar design. They have a small loop that has a D ring in it where you attach the leash and that will tighten the collar when they pull. It helps with control however you need to use CAUTION with dogs that have delicate necks because they can be injured under certain conditions. NEVER leave a dog with a Martingale collar on alone because if the small loop gets caught on something they could be injured when the loop tightens. Use with discretion please.
Martingale Collars without a buckle:
How to put on a martingale dog collar:
Put the collar over the dogs head. After it's on the neck, you will need to size it down but leave a bit of "wiggle room". There should be room to fit a couple fingers between the collar and your dogs neck. Then attach a leash to the D-ring on the small loop of the collar.
How to measure your pet for a Martingale dog collar:
Step 1: Measure the largest part of your dog's neck about where the collar will be when it's on your pet. If you have a dog with a large head you will need to use that size to figure out what size you need to purchase.
Add at LEAST 1 inch for a dogs neck smaller than about 13 inches and at least 2 inches for larger dogs.
Example: If your dogs largest measurement is 16 inches you need to add 2 inches so you will need to order a collar that fits at least 18 inches. That's because you need to room to get it over the head and to adjust it.
Pets HATE to have a tight collar shoved over their heads. I know, our dog hated a martingale since I had NO idea what I was doing when I first tried one. ;) Don't be me!!
General Sizes available
Small 12-15 inch neck size
Medium 14-18 inch neck size
Large 17-24 inch neck size
Extra Large 20-29 inch neck size
Most collars available in 5/8,3/4,1, 1 1/2" wide.
Martingale Collars with a buckle: Use the standard measuring for these collars. All collars regardless of style will need to have about 1 1/2 to 2 inches added to the pets neck size and that's what you will use for the upper end of collar size.
Example: Pets neck is 9 inches. Add 2 inches. Buy a collar that fits up to the 11 inches such as a collar that fits neck size 7-11
I hope that helps. I know I was totally at a loss when I first tried figuring this stuff out!
